The day after Daniel died, Uncle Chinh suffered a massive guilt attack. When Daniel’s agony finally left him, we all let out a sigh of relief. Some of us even had wished Death to arrive six months earlier. Uncle Chinh had nurtured such unfatherly thoughts. Visiting Daniel in the hospital pained him. Father and son had little to say to one another. They didn’t reminisce about the past. They didn’t discuss Daniel’s disease. They didn’t even argue like in the old days. Daniel’s rage prevented him from talking coherently. So he kept silent. The accusatory silence echoed as loudly as the desperate “Maman! Maman!” in Uncle Chinh’s heart. My uncle wanted to cry but the tears couldn’t come.
